Prestigious Durango Fall Classic Title Goes to Mitty

Over the weekend, the Durango Fall Classic was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and featured 64 teams from around the country. The Durango Fall Classic has taken place for the last two decades, and is “unquestionably the most prestigious and competitive high school volleyball event anywhere in the country.” It’s referred to as “an early-season national champion tournament.”

Five the nation’s top ten teams were in attendance—No. 2 Fayetteville (Fayetteville, AK), No. 5 Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville, KY), No. 7 Assumption (Louisville, KY), No. 8 Pleasant Grove (Pleasant Grove, UT) and No. 10 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, CA).

TEAM RESULTS

The 64 teams were divided into 16 pools of 4 teams each. Pool play was held on Friday, September 16, 2016, with the winner of each pool advancing to the Round of 16. After the Round of 16, the 8 winners were placed in the Championship Bracket and the 8 losers were placed in the Silver Bracket. The full tournament format is available here.

• 1st and 2nd place: Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, CA) defeated Xavier Prep (Phoenix, AZ) in the championship final in two straight sets (25-23, 25-19).
• 3rd and 4th place: Santa Margarita beat Sacred Heart in the third-place match (26-24, 25-15).
• 5th and 6th place: Walton (Marietta, GA) won the fifth-place match against Torrey Pines (San Diego, CA) in straight sets (25-17, 25-16).
