#11 Stanford Sweeps Oregon State After Rocky Start

The Oregon State Beavers put up a good fight in the first set in front of a substantial home crowd, by their standards, of 1,641, but eventually were overwhelmed by the 11th-ranked Stanford Cardinal in 3 sets.

The first frame saw Oregon State jump out to an early 15-10 lead before back-to-back kills from Inky Ajanaku pulled them back into the match. The scoring flipped back-and-forth between the two squads from there out, with each recording 18 kills and 8 errors in set 1, but Stanford wound up winning at 29.

That was the most competitive the match would be – the Cardinal opened up with a 6-0 run in set 2 (including their first 4 points by OSU errors); and had a 12-point run at 5-4 in the 3rd set to seal the match.

Stanford got 12 error-less kills from Kathryn Plummer and 11 from Ajanaku, who hit .667 and .563 respectively. Super-freshman Audriana Fitzmorris scored 6 kills to go with 8 block assists, contributing to a huge Stanford night at the net that included 14 team blocks.

Mary-Kate Marshall led all players with 13 kills, but paired with 4 errors her hitting average came out to .231.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – After a tough first set, the 11^th-ranked Stanford women’s volleyball team completed the sweep of Oregon State, 29-27, 25-15, 25-8, Friday in Gill Coliseum.

In the only scheduled meeting of the season between the Cardinal (8-2, 2-0 Pac-12) and Beavers (7-6, 0-2 Pac-12), Stanford hit .339, recorded 14.0 blocks and held a 56-41 advantage in digs. The Cardinal remains perfect all-time against the Beavers, improving to 64-0.

Freshman opposite Kathryn Plummer led the team with 12 kills on 18 errorless swings to hit a career-best .667. She also collected six blocks in the win. Redshirt senior middle blocker Inky Ajanaku hit .562, totaling 11 kills and three blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Michaela Keefe posted nine kills and matched her career-high with 13 digs. Leading 7-4 in the third set, Keefe reeled off 10 serves in a row before the Beavers could sideout.

Freshman Audriana Fitzmorris had eight blocks in the first two sets, while Ivana Vanjak finished with five kills and five blocks. Freshman libero Morgan Hentz racked up 16 digs in the win, including one that dropped on the Beavers’ side of the net for a kill in the second

In total, 14 Cardinal players took the court in the match, including the collegiate debut for redshirt freshman middle blocker Courtney Bowen. The Brooklyn, New York native tallied a block in her first match. Sophomore setter/defensive specialist Payton Chang earned her first playing time of the season, tallying two assists.

After escaping with a 29-27 first-set victory in which the Cardinal hit just .179 and committed eight attack errors, Stanford hit .414 in the second and .625 in the third.

Oregon State was led by junior Mary-Kate Marshall’s match-high 13 kills. Lanesha Reagan added seven kills and 10 digs, but was held to a -.059 attack percentage. Sophomore libero Kayla Ellis recorded 12 digs for the Beavers.

Stanford will head back to the Pacific Northwest next week, taking on No. 4 Washington on Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Washington State on Friday, Sept. 30. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Mary-Kate Marshall finished with a match-high 13 kills in the Oregon State volleyball team’s three-set loss to No. 11 Stanford in front of 1,641 fans Friday night at Gill Coliseum.

Set scores were 27-29, 15-25 and 8-25.

More than 750 of the 1,641 in attendance were members of the Oregon State BeaverDam in a fantastic turnout by the student group. They saw Marshall hit double figures in kills for the 10^th time in 13 matches this season.

Lanesha Reagan, meanwhile, tallied 10 digs to hit double figures for the sixth time this season. She was three kills shy of her fifth double double of the season.

Kayla Ellis led the Beavers with 12 digs, with Reagan’s 10 placing her second on the team. Overall, Stanford (8-2 overall, 2-0 Pac-12 Conference) finished with 56 digs to the Beavers’ (7-6, 0-2) 41.

The teams battled in a seesaw first set that saw the Cardinal win 29-27. The lead changed hands four times and the score was tied eight times. Each team finished with 18 kills and eight attack errors.

Emilie Wilmes made her season debut, finishing with one kill, one assist and a dig in two sets. Jessi Seumalo, who made her debut Thursday night against Oregon, also saw action in one set against the Cardinal.

The Beavers are back in action next week when visiting the Arizona schools. Oregon State opens against Arizona Friday in a match that starts at 8 p.m. PT. OSU then visits Arizona State Sunday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. Both matches will be available on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12.com. Live stats are available by visiting osubeavers.com.
