Claes/Hughes Stay Undefeated After Day 1 Of Long Beach President’s Cup

2017 FIVB LONG BEACH PRESIDENTS CUP

The first day of pool play has concluded at the FIVB Long Beach Presidents Cup, with Americans facing Americans and international squads facing one another. The same feat will continue on day two of the competition, with the women’s quarterfinals taking place along with just two men’s quarterfinal matches.

Saturday will end the remaining men’s quarterfinal matches followed by their semifinal and finals matches to take play on Sunday, July 16. The women’s will finish up on July 15 with their semifinal and finals matches occurring.

As soon as the semifinals hit, this is when the Americans will verse the world.

On the international side of the competition, Poland’s Kantor/Losiak, Canada’s Pedlow/Schachter and Spain’s Herrera/Gavira won both of their matches on day one. Herrera/Gavira had the most grueling match of the day with a two-set sweep over Brazil’s Alvaro Filho/Saymon. The grueling aspect came in that the second set went to 29-27, pushing the match nearly 10 points past its original ending place.

For the American’s Dalhausser/Lucena, Hyden/Doherty and Brunner/Patterson took both of their matches on the day. Out of all the matches on the day there were only three that went to three sets, all being played by the American crews.

Antunes/Franca of Brazil, Bansley/Wilkerson of Canada and Ludwig/Walkenhorst of Germany all went undefeated on day one of the President’s Cup. Antunes/Franca had an easy go-around, holding their opponents to just 47 points scored on the day.

For the Americans, it was a test between old partners, with Walsh Jennings and April Ross squaring off for the first time since their split in May. Ross/Fendrick took the match in two, with Walsh Jennings/Branagh dropping their second match of the day to Claes/Hughes.

Winning both of their matches for the American’s were April Ross/Fendrick, Claes/Hughes and Sweat/Summer.
