Africa Men’s Champs: ALG, CAM, EGY & TUN make semis

On October 26th, the quarterfinals for the African Men’s Volleyball Championship were played in Cairo, Egypt. The winners of these four matches would also be one step closer to playing in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Italy and Bulgaria. Three teams from the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) will represent the African continent at the World Championships.

Algeria who won Pool D played DR Congo who had finished 2nd in Pool A in the first match of the quarterfinals. The Algerians who are looking for their first African Men’s championship since 1993, comfortably swept the match 3-0, and would face the winner of Tunisia vs. Morocco.

Tunisia had finished 1st in Pool B were facing Morocco, who were 2nd in Pool C. These two countries are also in the same zone, Zone 1, so the teams are familiar with each other. Tunisia is looking win the African championship for the first time since 2003. While Morocco is looking for its first African title. Tunisia also had a comfortable sweep 3-0.

In the other half of the semifinals, Cameroon, winner of Pool C faced Libya who were 2nd in Pool B. Cameroon is looking for its first African title since 2001, while Libya is looking for its first. Cameroon took the first set which went to extra points 27-25. Libya responded to win a tight second set 25-23. The next two sets both went to 25-23, but Cameroon took the 3rd, while Libya took the 4th to push the match to five sets. Cameroon got a gap in the 5th and kept it to win the match 3-2 and the set 15-9. Cameroon would face the winner of Egypt vs. Rwanda.

Egypt who won Pool A, and are the six straight times defending African Men’s champions (2005-2015) were facing Rwanda who were 2nd in Pool D. Egypt thoroughly dominated the match to sweep 3-0.

With the semifinals now set, the winning teams will be guaranteed their tickets to the World Championships, while the losers must play for their ticket the 3rd place. Algeria last appeared at the World Championships in 1998, while Cameroon, Egypt and Tunisia all play in the 2014 World Championships in Poland.
