After Day 4 of the Women’s African Nations Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon, three of the four semifinal spots have been clinched. In Pool A, the hosts Cameroon and Egypt have a record of 2-0 in their four team pool. While in Pool B with five teams, Kenya has won all of their four matches to clinch their berth in the semifinals.
The Women’s African Nations Championship is also the final round of qualifying for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship for the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB). Only the two finalists will make the trip to Japan. The remaining spot in the semifinals is in Pool B, which will be between Senegal, Nigeria and Tunisia on the final day of pool play on the 11th. Semifinals will be on the 13th and the final on the 14th.
Here are the scenarios for the three teams:
Senegal 6 points, 2 wins-1 loss, 6 sets won-5 sets lost
If Senegal wins two sets against Nigeria, they will reach 7 points, which cannot be matched by Nigeria or Tunisia. However, if Senegal loses in 3 or 4 sets, they will be eliminated as they will have a worse sets ratio than Nigeria.
Nigeria 3 points, 1-2, 4-6
Nigeria must defeat Senegal in 3 or 4 sets. If in 3 sets, Nigeria will advance as they will have a better sets ratio than Tunisia (if it wins) and Senegal. However, if Nigeria wins in 4 sets and Tunisia wins over DR Congo in 3 sets, both Nigeria and Tunisia will be tied on sets ratio. Currently Tunisia has +38 points difference (Tunisia +3 and Nigeria -35) advantage over Nigeria, so Tunisia would advance on points ratio if tied on sets ratio.
Tunisia 3 points, 1-2, 4-7
Tunisia must win in 3 sets against DR Congo and have Nigeria win in 4 sets. Tunisia would tie on points, and also on sets ratio. Tunisia would more than likely advance on points ratio. Currently Tunisia has +38 points difference (Tunisia +3 and Nigeria -35) advantage over Nigeria. Any other result and Tunisia is eliminated.
