While the Brazilians ruled the day in the women’s draw, it was the Americans who advanced 3 pairs to the quarterfinals of the men’s tournament. Friday’s matches played into the darkness in wet conditions in the Barra da Tijuca, where tennis was played during last summer’s Olympic Games.
Men’s Draw
Also lurking, though, are the defending men’s Olympic champions Alison/Bruno Schmidt, who will play Americans Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb in the quarterfinals. Crabb and Gibb advanced to the same round of their first tournament together as a pair this season, the Ft. Laurderdale major that opened the season in February, where they lost to another Brazilian pair – Evandro Goncalves and Andre Loyola.
In Rio, Evandro/Andre lost to their countrymates Alvaro Filho/Sayman in Friday’s round of 16, who dropped a 2-0 sweep (21-18, 21-18) in 39 minutes to advance. Alvaro Filho/Saymon advance to play the Italians Lupo/Nicolai, who took silver at last summer’s Olympic Games as a Cinderella-story 10th seed.

The bronze medalists also advanced to the quarterfinals – Dutch duo Brouwer/Meeuwsen will face Americans Brunner/Patterson in the round of 8.
