Alyssa Valdez is Ateneo’s most famous volleyball player to date. Before graduating 3 years ago, she led the team to two UAAP titles, while also taking home 3 MVP awards. Professionally, she then went to play on many teams, as well as the Philippines national team. She is currently suiting up for Creamline in the Premier Volleyball League, and as Ateneo now boasts a professional team as well, she had the chance to play against her alma-matter for the first time in her career.
Before the match, she was visibly emotional about seeing her former teammates in an interview given to Spin.ph:
“I’m really proud of the girls, and they are doing really well. I’m very excited. I am happy that we are growing with the teams we have been playing with. We have built character after college. We’re really happy for each other, for our growth, and we’re really supporting each other.”
When the game came around, Valdez didn’t shy away from the action, pouring in 19 points as Creamline took the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-14). After the game, she displayed her satisfaction at how far Ateneo has come as a team:
“I’m just really proud of them. Their team is growing, so I hope this was a good experience for them also.”
Creamline now leads the tournament with a 6-1 record while Ateneo is in 3rd place with a 5-2 record.
