After a year of great successes, Slovenian men’s national team head coach, Andrea Giani, is stepping down from his position.

The Italian guided Slovenian team won the FIVB Volleyball World League Group 3, following up on that with a silver medal at the CEV European Championships. Giani’s contract expired in July and has decided not to renew it.

“I want to simply thank you for this opportunity you have given to me and for this great experience we lived together,” said Giani. “Through many sacrifices we created a team with a great identity. Today we can feel proud of what we have achieved, and I hop it will serve to you to grow further in your future.”

With Giani stepping down, the Slovenian team now has a struggle against time to find a replacement for the team.

In the 2017 season, the Slovenian squad is set to compete in the World League Group 2, to take part in the European qualifiers for the Italy and Bulgaria 2018, FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships and will try to improve on their silver medal finish at the Poland 2017 European Championship.

“Despite our efforts, Andrea decided not to extend his contract as a head coach of our men’s team,” Slovenia Volleyball President Metod Ropret said. “We are sincerely thankful to Andrea for everything that he has done for Slovenian volleyball and Slovenian sport.”
