With the 2017 season in the books and the offseason underway, the transfer market continues to cause shuffling. The latest part of that movement is Becky Porter, a transfer from NC State who is headed to Appalachian State for 2018.
Porter, a 6’1″ setter, joins the Mountaineers after three seasons with the Wolfpack, including 2017 when they made the NCAA Tournament second round. Being that she was with NC State for a trio of seasons, she will have one year left of play for Appalachian State.
In her past three years with NC State, Porter saw action in 38 matches and averaged 6.02 assists and 1.65 digs per set. Most of those numbers came last year, when she appeared in 20 matches on the year as a junior. Her top statistic mark though came in 2016 when she notched 9.14 assists per set as a freshman, followed by 8.88 assists per set as a sophomore, including 57 in one match against Florida State.
“Adding Becky to the roster this spring is huge for App State Volleyball,” Mountaineers head coach Matt Ginipro said in the team’s release of the addition. “She is a big, physical setter who will allow us to be more offensive in that position than we have been and was on a team that made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament this season. I know she’s excited to jump right into our team culture in January and get going on the 2018 season.”
Appalachian State finished the 2017 season with a 12-20 record and a 6-10 mark in conference action. Of the two setters on their roster this past season, their starter, Ashlyn Brown, exhausted her eligibility. That leaves just junior-to-be Amanda Krahl at the position for returners, presumably meaning Porter will battle with Krahl for a starting spot.
