USAV Collegiate Beach Championships

The USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships are underway. The 24 women’s teams have been divided into six pools, A through F. The top two teams in each pool advance as well as the highest four of the third-place pool finishers, based on their point ratios. Only American citizens were eligible to play in the tournament resulting in mixed pairs from several schools.

Arizona’s top duo Madison and McKenna Witt (2-0) did not allow opponents to score more than 16 points in either of their straight-set wins to open Pool F play. The twins, which went 21-8 and finished third at the Pac-12 Pairs Championships, defeated LSU’s Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss as well as South Carolina’s Katie Zimmerman and Macie Tendrich.

Florida State’s Victoria Paranagua and Vanessa Freire split the day, topping Zimmerman and Tendrich in the opener 11-21, 21-16, 15-10 before falling to the Coppola and Nuss.

Zimmerman/Tendrich will take on Coppola/Nuss to start Friday’s action, while the Witt twins will face Paranagua /Freire in the second match.

Paranagua typically plays No. 3 for the Seminoles alongside Mary Jerger (17-7), while Freire occupies the No. 2 position with Francesa Goncalves (12-3).  Coppola and Nuss went 26-6 for LSU, including 17-5  on the No. 1 line. Zimmerman and Tendrich (13-2) are South Carolina’s No. 3 pair.
