2017 Taipei Summer Universiade (World University Games) – Women’s Tournament

It will be an all Asia semifinals in Taipei’s Universiade women’s volleyball tournament. Russia will go against Ukraine, as hosts Taipei will face off against Japan in hopes of winning a finals berth. This is a testament to Asia’s continuous rise to volleyball relevancy.

The highlight of the day, though, came in the not so glamorous 9th – 16th playoffs, as Former Alabama and VolleyMob All-America third team and  AVCA All-American Honorable Mention Krystal Rivers had an amazing 40 point game.

Quarterfinals

Russia beat Thailand 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-12) behind Natalia Malykh’s 17 points. Wipawee Shrithong and Patcharaporn Sittisad each had six points in the losing effort.

Ukraine beat France 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 15-12) behind Anastaia Chernukha’s 19 points. Alexandra Dascalu had 27 points in the losing effort.

Japan beat Finland 3-1 (22-15, 25-19, 25-13, 25-22) behind Yuka Imamura’s 20 points. Piia Korhonen had 25 points in the losing effort.

Taipei beat Argentina 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-22) behind Tzu-Ya Chen’s 10 points. Carla Castiglione had seven points in the losing effort.

9th–16th place quarterfinals

Brazil beat Latvia 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-23) behind Sonaly Cidrão‘s 14 points. Anna Embrenkte had 11 points in the losing effort.

Switzerland beat Colombia 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-14) behind Laura Kuenzler‘s 15 points. Colombia’s team high was a lowly five points from Stephanie Gonzalez.

The Czech Republic beat Canada 3-1 (25-20, 14-25, 25-12, 25-17) behind Martina Michalikova’s 15 points. Kelsey Veltman had 13 points in the losing effort.

Team USA beat Mexico 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-10, 21-25, 15-12) behind Krystal River’s whopping 40 points. Dulce Cabrales and Alejandra Segura each had 13 points in the losing effort.

Team USA will go on to face the Czech Republic, while Brazil will face off against Switzerland.
