In the first of nine collaborative events and first of four in Turkey between the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) and the FIVB, the Aydin Open opened on Thursday.
After two rounds of qualification, four men’s teams and four women’s teams earned spots in Friday’s main draw.
Just one women’s match of the 12 went the distance with Italians Claudia Puccinelli/Gaia Traballi overcoming a 21-17 Set 1 loss to take it 21-14, 15-7 to move on.
The other teams who made it through to the main draw were: Silvia Costantini/Agata Zuccarelli (Italy), Tadva Yoken/Sigrid Simonsson (Sweden) and Line Trans Hansen/Maria Elisabeth Tyndeskov (Denmark).
On the men’s side, Sweden’s Jakob Molin/Linus Tholse battled through a tiebreak match against Switzerland’s Michiel Zandbergen/Gabriel Kissling to claim their spot in the main draw.
Joining the Swedes were: Spain’s Raul Mesa/Christian Garcia, Poland’s Mateusz Lysikowski/Mateusz Paszkowski and Serbia’s Stefan Basta/Lazar Kolaric.
Basta/Kolaric had an up-and-down start to the day with a 21-9, 20-22, 15-11 victory over Abdelrahman Fayed/Ahmed Famy Farag of Egypt.
Austria’s Felix Friedl/Maximilian Trummer outlasted Croatians Josip Pribanic/Marin Jercic in the opening round 21-16, 19-21, 15-12 but were ousted from the competition by Mesa/Garcia in the second round after the Spaniards came back from a 19-16 deficit in the second set.
Pool play is set to begin on Friday.
