Bruce W. Giggy, a former volleyball coach at Columbus North High School and Columbus Christian School in Columbus, Indiana, has entered guilty please to 3 Class C felonies related to molesting children, according to court documents. He will be sentenced on June 12th.

Giggy was accused of molesting four children under the age of 14 between 1999 and 2008, which resulted in 5 felony charges filed last year. After several delays in the case, Giggy eventually reached a plea bargain with the Bartholomew County Proscecutor’s office to dismiss 2 of the charges, leaving 3 remaining.

Giggy was the freshman volleyball coach at Columbus North High School from 2005 through 2009. He later became the varsity coach at Columbus Christian School, before leaving after the fall of 2016 when police began their investigation. None of the victims involved in the investigation were students at Columbus Christian School.

The timeline of the case implies that all four victims investigated are now adults.

According to the local newspaper, as many as five witnesses are expected to speak on Giggy’s behalf at the sentencing hearing. Several posts on social media were also supportive of Giggy, with friends of his calling them “false accusations” and saying that “there is no way he would do this.”

Someone claiming to be his son Jeremy responded to some of those comments, saying that “everyone is capable of messing up” and “we are supporting his case for a fair trial, and dwe are preparing for anything.”

Class C felonies in the state of Indiana carry a minimum prison sentence of 2 years and a maximum sentence of 8 years, with up to a $10,000 fine per charge. Those prison sentences can be served either concurrently (at the same time), or consecutively (up to 24 years). Giggy was also told that at the time of his plea that he would have to register as a sex offender.

Giggy was formally banned by the U.S. Center for Safe Sport on January 4th, 2018. That makes him permanently ineligible for membership (including as a coach and official) within USA Volleyball or any other organization under the umbrella of the USOC. It would not necessarily apply to high school teams.
