Baylor Sweeps LSU in Baton Rouge

RECAP

The Baylor Bears fought well to beat the LSU Tigers in LSU’s Maravich Center in three straight sets. LSU had the lead in both the first and third sets before Baylor went on scoring runs.

The Bears led the Tigers in kills 40 to 35, in hitting percentage .260 to .147, and in blocks 9 to 5. The star of the Baylor offense was Katie Staiger with 22 kills and a .463 attack percentage for the match. Camryn Freiberg led the Bears in blocks with 7. The LSU attack was more balanced—Tiara Gibson, Gina Tillis and Jacqui Armer each tallied 8 kills. Anna Zwiebel also collected two solo blocks in the match.

Defensively, Staiger was again Baylor’s standout with 14 digs. Morgan Reed had 34 assists in the match. For LSU, Zwiebel was their primary passer with 25 assists and she also had the most digs for her team with 10.

This Friday, September 16th, Baylor will host Virginia, College of Charleston and Washington State in the 2016 Baylor Classic. LSU will return to action on Sunday, September 18th, to take on Florida State.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Baylor volleyball (7-4) drilled out a 3-0 sweep over LSU (5-5) on the road, 25-22, 25-19, 26-24, at the Maravich Center.

BU bounced back from an 8-6 deficit, running off an 8-0 run to take control of the set, at 14-8.

Fighting off a late push by LSU, the Bears outlasted the Tigers to take the first set, 25-22.

In the second, with the teams squared at 1-1, the Bears took an even bigger run, rattling off a 10-0 stretch to take control of the set.

Leading 24-14 with a set point, BU again had to fight off a late LSU push, ending a 5-0 Tiger run with a kill by Katie Staiger, taking the second set, 25-19.

In set three, LSU was in control early, leading by five at 13-8. With a 7-1 run by the Bears, BU was able to regain the lead, taking a 15-14 lead.

The teams traded points into the late stretch of the set, with the Tigers climbing back to force a set point, leading 24-23.

A kill by Staiger and a setting error on the Tigers put the Bears back in front, 25-24, setting up a match point.

The Bears forced LSU to push an attack wide for an error, clinching the sweep with a 26-24 third set win.

HIGHLIGHTS
Katie Staiger posted her fifth double-double of the season, pounding out 22 kills on a .463 attacking percentage, adding 14 digs and four blocks.
Camryn Freiberg matched a career-high with seven blocks, six block assists and a solo.
• BU outblocked LSU, 9.0-5.0.
• The Bears hit .452 in the first set, the highest of the match for either side.

The Bears return to Waco after an eight-match road trip, hosting Virginia, College of Charleston, and Washington State for the 2016 Baylor Classic, running Sept. 16-17 with Baylor’s first match with Virginia starting on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.

BATON ROUGE – Looking to extend its win streak to four matches, the LSU volleyball team dropped its match to Baylor (7-5) in three sets 22-25, 19-25, 26-24 Wednesday night at the Maravich Center.

LSU fell to 5-5 with the loss to the Bears. Baylor outhit LSU .260-.147 in the match with LSU committing 20 errors to Baylor’s 15. LSU was outblocked as well with Baylor winning the battle at the net 9.0-5.0. Katie Staiger led the way for the Bears with a .463 hitting percentage, 22 kills and 14 digs.

What’s Next
The Tigers return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday against Florida State to cap off Alumni Weekend. The team and staff will welcome back more than 50 alumnae and their guests for the weekend. All matches are free to the public, and fans are reminded of the Geaux Clear policy aimed to speed up gate entries and enhance fan safety.

“This was not the team that played at Orlando last weekend. They played at a really high level, we were confident, we were poised and we were composed. I really thought our upperclassmen would push through but it didn’t happen. We couldn’t get anything out of anybody. It was a disappointing performance.”

Opening Set
The Bears took control of the first set with 16 kills and just two errors for a .452 hitting percentage. The Tigers faltered with seven errors in the frame. Staiger showed off with a dominating 10 kills on 12 attempts for a hitting percentage of .833. Despite LSU being outhit, the set featured six tie scores and two lead changes.

Second Set
Baylor took hold of the second set and never looked back, getting out to a 12-2 lead. The Tigers tied it at one in the beginning but the Bears never relinquished the lead. Although Baylor hit just .192 in the set, they took advantage of seven LSU attacking errors and five service errors.

Deciding Set
LSU took advantage of nine attacking errors by Baylor and a .154 hitting percentage to keep the match close but ultimately the Tiger couldn’t close it out after hitting just .088. Trailing 21-17, LSU fired off three of the next points to force the Bears to take a timeout. After LSU took a 24-23 lead looking to force a fourth set, Baylor closed out the match with a kill by Staiger and two errors by LSU.

Team Notes
>> Freshman Jacqui Armer hit .700 with eight kills on 10 attempts. Armer became the first LSU player to hit .700 in a match since 2014. Five of Armer’s eight kills came in the third set.

>> Armer along with senior Tiara Gibson and junior Gina Tillis led the team in kills with eight each.

>> Freshman Anna Zwiebel tallied her third double-double of the season with 25 assists and 10 digs. Zwiebel led the way for the Tigers in both categories on the night.
