Sophomore Liam Maxwell tallied 15 kills to reach 500 for his career, but Coker captured a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-11) victory over Belmont Abbey in men’ volleyball action Tuesday night. Maxwell had just two errors in 28 attempts for a .464 hitting percentage.
Belmont Abbey (6-11) captured the first set after breaking a 2-2 tie with five straight points. Coker (7-7) rallied to within four at 10-6, but the Crusaders stretched the margin to 14-7. Later with the score 22-18, two service errors and a kill by Maxwell led to a first set victory, 25-20.
The Cobras responded with wins in the next three sets. They broke a 4-4 tie with four straight points, then maintained the advantage until the Crusaders tallied three of four to trail by one, 21-20. But Coker answered three straight en route to the 25-20 win. The difference in the third came when the Cobras scored four straight to break a 17-17 tie. The Abbey scored two of the next three to close to within 22-19, but the home team rattled off three in a row to take the set 25-19.
The fourth set was all Coker as it broke a 2-2 tie with six straight points to start a 9-1 run. The score was 14-6 when the Cobra used four in a row and seven of eight to lead 21-7. Belmont Abbey tallied back-to-back kills, but had three straight errors to set up the first match point, 24-9. After saving two, the Cobras took the match 25-11.
Belmont Abbey returns to action next Wednesday when it welcomes Charleston (W. Va.) to the Wheeler Center.
