After having his name announced as a possible candidate in this year’s state government elections, Bernardinho‘s party has officially announced that the victorious coach has chosen to pull out of the race due to personal reasons (much to the happiness of his wife). He will now help the party only indirectly, supporting other candidates and congressmen.
Some media portals have raised the question if the sudden pull out is relate to the fact that Bernardinho‘s former business partner at a marketing firm, Roberto Rzezinski, was arrested by Brazilian authorities last week on financial crime charges. Bernardinho vehemently denied any knowledge of his former partner’s wrongdoing (Istoe.com.br):
“People are drawing up wrong conclusions. I have never had any business with corruption practices. Roberto was, to my knowledge, a simple businessman. Who would have imagined he was involved in such criminal behavior? I thought of getting into politics to help people, but I don’t to see my name connected to crimes. I’ve built my life on sports, I am not rich. The only thing I have is my name.”
The news that Bernardinho will not run for office is great for Brazilian female volleyball, but will the successful coach’s reputation take a hit due to his former partner’s downfall?
