Sad news for the volleyball world. According to many European media outlets (Source 1, Source 2), Erna Sinanovic, perhaps one of the best Bosnian players to ever play the game, died as a result of a car accident on the municipality of Kalesija – Zivinice on Jan. 4, 2018. The head-on collision also took the life of two other passengers, Ajša Hamzić (57) and Ajaša Hamzić (55), and severely injure two more, Merima Hamzić (26) and Mehmed Šmigalović (19).

The 35 year old Sinanovic represented Bosnia and Herzegovina internationally since 1997, before retiring in 2016. She played as libero for mmany of Bosnia’s top teams during her storied career.

Her father, Suljo Sinanovic, gave an emotional interview to Bosnian website Source.ba:

Her car was with a work colleague, so she had to take a ride. It all happened about 7 or 8km from her home. I don’t know how the other vehicle came on to the opposite lane, or if there was a third car involved. It was a very rainy day, with a lot of fog. I am trying to take this all in, but it’s very hard to do. I had had coffee with her only in the afternoon. In life, everything can change from best to worst in an instant. I was called by people from all over Bosnia and Serbia, as Erna is a sports icon. I can not hide the tears. I am very proud of her.

VolleyMob’s editorial staff expresses condolences to the family and friends of Erna Sinanović.
