Brazilian media is reporting that all-world outside hitter, Ricardo Lucarelli, who is currently rehabbing from an Achilles tear, will re-sign with Brazilian powers of Taubate for next season, remaining with the club that he has played with since 2015.
The Brazilian National Team member and 2016 Olympic gold medalist was named to the All-Tournament Dream Team at the 2016 Olympic Games, one of two players to earn Best Outside Hitters honors as Brazil won gold.
The decision to re-up with Taubate means that Lucarelli has resisted the deep pockets of defending league champions Sada Cruzeiro, among the richest clubs in the world, whom rumors had Lucarelli connected to.
Taubate currently sits 3rd in the Brazilian table with a 16-5 record and 47 points and 3 weeks of regular season play remaining. Cruzeiro ranks 1st with 54 points (18-3 record), while SESC is 2nd with 49 points (17-4 record). Lucarelli injured his Achilles in November against Campinas and had to undergo surgery. He is all-but-ruled out for a return this season, though there’s some hope that he’ll be back for Brazil’s World Championship run this summer. The team has turned to Marko Ivovic and Wallace Souza in his absence.
