A scandal shook the Brazilian volleyball community this week as player Suelle Oliveira took to her personal Instagram page to accuse her ex-husband of stalking, threats, and other kinds of violence and abuse. Her post, directed at her fans and which reads more like a plea for help, states she decided to come forth and make the accusations public after her ex-husband started to accuse the her of using steroids in social media. She also made it clear that if need be, she is available for medical testing at any time:

“I come through this note to repudiate the accusations made against me by Mr. Rubens Gimenes Neto, heir of the Almeida Prado Family, and with whom I maintained a relationship of 5 years, having been separated for the last 7 months, a separation which was not accepted by him, and which since then has launched him on a tirade to harm me.

Currently, he deprives me of one of the greatest assets a human being can have, FREEDOM. Today, I say to you, that I live in FEAR. I have already taken the matters to the police due to his threats, stalking, and home invasion. I did not want to have to expose all this to you, but I know that in a way I am raising the flag of a cause so recurrent in several homes, a situation that encourages me to expose what I am unfortunately living.

As for his accusations regarding my integrity as an athlete, everyone who accompanies me and lives with me knows my character and my nature. I am very proud of my profession and would never make use of anything illegal/illicit that would put me at an advantage over my workmates. During all these years of my career, I performed all medical examinations that were required of me. I make myself fully available for any type of examination, if necessary, by the competent authorities. I have full conviction of my integrity. I affirm that legal action will be taken and I apologize to you for the inconvenience. Thank you for all the support!

Suelle, who has 34 caps for Brazil’s national team, and was awarded the best outside hitter award at the 2014 FIVB Club WCH, last wore Hinode/Barueri‘s colors in Superliga, and will play in the Japanese League next year.
