Columbia University head women’s volleyball coach Brie Katz has announced her resignation on Thursday to “pursue other opportunities.” She will remain with the program through the end of February.
Katz’s recognition comes after 4 seasons leading the Lions. Columbia finished with a 10-13 record, including 5-9 in the Ivy League. Thar record left them 7th out of 8 teams in the balanced conference. The team’s overall record in her 4 seasons was 39-54 (23-33 Ivy League), a .419 winning percentage.
Columbia has only once in program history (tied for 2nd – 2012) finished higher in the Ivy League than their 3rd-place finish in 2016.
Columbia’s results in the Brie Katz era:
- 2014: 8-15 (4-10 Ivy, 7th place)
- 2015: 7-16 (5-9 Ivy, 6th place)
- 2016: 14-10 (9-5 Ivy, 3rd place)
- 2017: 10-13 (5-9 Ivy, 7th place)
“I feel extremely grateful to have worked with such remarkable student-athletes, exceptional coaches and supportive administration for the past 13 years,” Katz said. “I want to thank Peter Pilling and M. Dianne Murphy for providing me with the opportunity to lead this program. I also want to thank the Columbia volleyball alumnae, who have been so supportive and committed to building a program we can all be proud of. I care deeply about everyone in the Columbia volleyball family, and wish the current team and future Lions the very best in 2018 and all the years ahead.”
During Katz’s tenure, she coached 20 All-Ivy League players, including 2015 and 2016 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year Cassie Wes, and 2016 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Chichi Ikwuazom.
Katz spent 3 prior seasons as an assistant coach at Columbia – her first college coaching spot. She also served a tour as an assistant coach for a U.S. Collegiate team in 2008, and otherwise served as the setting coach for the Long Island Juniors Volleyball Club. She was a 4-year letter winner at Hofstra as a player and was once named the America East conference Setter of the Year.
