BYU Press Release

Lyndie Haddock’s third consecutive double-double helped No. 16 BYU women’s volleyball sweep Pepperdine (25-14, 25-12, 25-20) Thursday night at the Smith Fieldhouse.

“I really liked how focused we were from the beginning,” BYU head coach Heather Olmstead said. “Lyndie (Haddock) set a great game and distributed the offense well and got a lot of hitters involved. I thought offensively and defensively we were disciplined, so it was a great match.”

Setter Lyndie Haddock recorded her fifth season and third consecutive double-double with 11 digs and 34 assists to help BYU improve to 18-3 overall and 7-2 in the West Coast Conference. Senior Amy Boswell tallied a season-high tying seven blocks while Mary Lake collected nine digs. McKenna Miller added nine kills and Lacy Haddock and Veronica Jones-Perry each chipped in eight kills during the Cougars’ victory.

Pepperdine (8-13, 2-7 WCC) put up the first three points of the first set before BYU quickly countered to tie the score. A Lacy Haddock kill sparked a 6-0 run to force an early timeout and prevent the Waves from taking the lead for the rest of the set. Boswell fueled the Cougar offense with the next four points to bring the score to 13-7. Pepperdine answered with a kill on the next point, but the Cougars took off again and there was no turning back. BYU took the first set, 25-14, on a Pepperdine attack error.

Middle blocker Whitney Young Howard opened the second set for BYU with a kill. The Waves managed to keep up with the Cougars’ pace before a Lyndie Haddock service ace created distance for the Cougars at a 7-4 advantage. BYU built on the momentum to gain an eight-point lead, 13-5. Boswell and Miller teamed up to earn the Cougars’ first double-digit lead of the game, 19-9. Pepperdine attempted to stop the Cougars but couldn’t as BYU won the set on a Lacy Haddock kill, 25-12.

Both teams traded points at the beginning of the third set before a Miller kill gave the Cougars a 6-5 advantage. Pepperdine tied the score at eight apiece, but BYU answered by winning the next three points. Jones-Perry earned the Cougars’ fourth service ace of the night to give BYU a 14-10 lead. The Waves rallied back to bring the set within one point, 18-17, before BYU took the next two points on kills by Miller and Howard. A Lacy Haddock service ace ended the set in BYU’s favor, 25-20.

The Cougars host Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. MDT. The match will be broadcast on BYUtv and simulcast on BYU Radio. Members of Cosmo’s Kids Club will get free admission into the match and there will be prizes and giveaways.

Pepperdine Press Release

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team fell in straight sets in a West Coast Conference bout with No. 16-ranked BYU at the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse with 25-14, 25-12 and 25-20 final set results.

The Waves (8-13, 2-7 WCC) produced a .117 attack percentage throughout the match on 32 kills and a 50 percent success rate, while adding 37 digs and 3.0 team blocks.  The Cougars (18-3, 7-2 WCC) were successful 80 percent of the time on a .316 hitting percentage after putting down 40 kills and only nine errors on 98 swings.  BYU also picked up five aces, 35 digs and 12.0 team blocks against Pepperdine.

Junior Ashley Harris (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande HS/Arizona) led the team with six kills on a .312 hitting percentage, while sophomore Tarah Wylie(Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) smashed down five kills.

Five waves posted four kills throughout the night, including freshman Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) who also added a team-high block assists.  Sophomores Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) and Jenna Tunnell (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) each tabbed 15 assists with their four kills, and Dyer added six digs and Tunnell five for the Waves.

Freshman Hana Lishman (Kailua, Hawai’i/Punahou School) led the tea with seven digs, while sophomore Ashley Morgan (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) amassed six.

Pepperdine worked out to a quick 3-0 lead over BYU, but that would be the last lead the Waves would possess throughout the set as the Cougars evened things up and then surged out to a 10-4 advantage.  The Waves littered a few points throughout the set, but the home team had the edge and continued to pound down the attacks and reject Pepperdine on the block, eventually leading to a 25-14 set one victory.

Then in the second set, the teams went back-and-forth to kick off the start of play, advancing to a 5-4 BYU lead before the Cougars advanced to a 10-4 lead.  The Waves once again scattered points throughout the set, but the home team was successful offensively and defensively yet again to go up 2-0 with a 25-12 second set win.

The third set was the closest of the match.  After Harris produced multiple kills to start the set off, the teams were tied at the 5-5 mark.  BYU started to break away after the 8-8 tie, en route to a 15-10 advantage over Pepperdine, but the Waves refused to roll over and eventually came within two points of the home team 15-17.  The Waves stayed two points away from the Cougars until the 21-19 mark, when BYU broke away from the see-saw battle and took home the sweep with a final 25-20 set win.

The Waves will continue the road trip with No. 5 San Diego on Saturday, October 22 at 12 p.m. (PT).  Find live stats and stream here: http://gowav.es/2bT5hVh.  Follow the Waves on Facebook and Twitter @WavesVolleyball for immediate updates, recaps and more.
