Following an unbeaten weekend and a five-set win over then-#1 Ohio State, BYU’s freshman Gabi Garcia Fernandez has been named the AVCA Men’s Division I-II Player of the Week.
The San Juan, Puerto Rico native slammed down an average of 3.56 kills per set on a .349 hitting clip across two matches while also picking up 1.78 digs per set and 1.11 blocks per set.
The Cougars started off their week with a four-set win over #14 Ball State in which Garcia Fernandez put down his first career double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs on a .458 hitting clip. He then followed up that performance with 19 kills, five digs and six blocks against the reigning champions Ohio State. In total, Garcia Fernandez put down 32 kills, 16 digs, 10 block and five aces for the week.
In other awards earned by Garcia Fernandez this week, he was named the MPSF Offensive Player of the Week along with an Honorable Mention by VolleyMob for his performances this week.
Garcia Fernandez is the 29th player in BYU men’s history to earn an AVCA Player of the Week honor, with Jake Langlois being the last to garner the award on March 21, 2017.
