Cerutti/Schmidt Back On Top Of FIVB World Tour Rankings

0 Carly DeMarque | May 22nd, 2017 | Beach, FIVB World Tour, News, Pro Beach

With the conclusion of the most recent FIVB Beach World Tour event in Rio, there have been a few changes made to the points that each pairing has earned up to this point in the season.

There have been many changes made to the team’s line-ups on the FIVB World Rankings lists for both men and women, so point ratios are not 100% accurate to current pairings. The FIVB updates their list on the Monday following an FIVB sanctioned event that offers any point value for the pairs competing. The rankings of the teams are based on the eight best results from the past year (365 days) – why the pairings are not exactly on point, seeing as they have points accumulated with another partner over the past year.

This season, the FIVB has extended the deadline to June 5 to register for the Vienna 2017, FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship – with the postponement of the Lucerne four-star tournament to early September. This means that the Moscow three-star tournament will go towards the decisions made for the World Championships.

Following the conclusion of the Rio event, Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt have moved their way back into the #1 position with 4,460 points, just 40 points ahead over Latvian pair, Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs who haven’t competed in an FIVB World Tour event since the opener in Fort Lauderdale. This past weekend, Phil Dalhausser and partner Nick Lucena stepped away from the FIVB scene to compete at the AVP event in Austin, winning the title there – which has no bearing on points in the FIVB system. Dalhausser/Lucena will, however, be traveling to Moscow for the next FIVB event.

On the women’s side, the top positions haven’t changed much with Larissa Maestrini and Talita Antunes still leading the pack with an impressive 5,240 points on the year. Olympic champions, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst stay in a close second with 4,780 total points. Ludwig and Walkenhorst have struggled on the year, as Ludwig underwent surgery earlier this year to correct a shoulder issue.

There will be a total of 48 teams that will qualify for the World Championships – 23 based on FIVB Ranking, 20 from each of the 5 continental confederations (4 entries each), two for the host country and three wild cards. To read more on the qualifying process click here.

The tournaments that these athletes compete in early on will determine whether or not they qualify for the big event at the end of the season that will offer up a $1 million purse prize.
