Cincinnati State Suspends Volleyball Program for 2017 Season

Cincinnati State has suspended all of its varsity sports aside from men’s and women’s soccer, including its women’s volleyball program. The other teams suspended for the 2017-2018 season are men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and men’s golf.

“We aren’t dropping sports teams or eliminating athletics,” the college’s president, Monica Posey, said. “We’re going through a transition.”

The school competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) , and lost in the District F tournament while playing for a spot in the NJCAA National Championship tournament.

The school is in the midst of a multi-year enrollment decline since a 5.2% jump in 2013. In 2015, that included a decline of 10% to just 9,664 students, which led to declining revenues for the school. Last summer, they eliminated 33 positions for the 2017 fiscal year. At the time, interim president Monica Posey said that an improved economy actually was a cause for the drop in enrollment, saying that people will leave community colleges for jobs when jobs are available.

“Because the economy is good, people either drop out or elect not to go to community college,” Posey said. “We’re expecting positive enrollment this fall, we’re hopeful, we have a good plan, but we have a conservative budget.”

The school emphasized that they are not cutting the sports, and plan to return a broader athletics program in the future after they finish a restructuring.
