Concordia-St. Paul Takes Over #1 Spot in AVCA Division II Poll

Concordia-St. Paul returned to the top spot in this week’s AVCA Division II Poll after being chosen No. 1 in the preseason. The Golden Bears, which are 13-2 on the season, collected 42 first place votes and 1,191 points.

Concordia-St. Paul, which is riding a 7-match win streak, posted a sweep against Sioux Falls and a 5-set victory against then-10th ranked Southwest Minnesota State last weekend.

Cal State Bernardino jumped from 5th to 2nd in this week’s poll, receiving 3 first place votes and 1,101 points. Northern State (1 first place vote, 1,036 points), Nebraska-Kearney (1 first place vote, 1,019 points) and Minnesota Duluth (891) round out the Top 5.

Minnesota Duluth beat #1 Northern State in five sets on Saturday. UMD is playing without Sarah Kelly, a 2017 First-Team All-American and the team’s leading scorer last season. Kelly injured her right knee with an awkward jump in practice on September 10th and hasn’t played since. 

So far in 2018, 4 different programs have been ranked No. 1. Concordia-St. Paul was first in the preseason and this week, Minnesota Duluth held the top spot in Week 1, Nebraska-Kearney took over for Week 2 and Week 3 and Northern State earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking in Week 4.

Cal Poly Pomona entered the Top 25 after receiving votes in week 4. The Broncos earned 113 points and are 13-1 on the year.

Wayne State is the lone team to fall out of the poll this week.
