Concordia University of Chicago will be adding men’s volleyball as a school sponsored sport for the 2018/2019 school year, bringing the amount of Division III men’s volleyball programs to 93. Men’s volleyball will become the 17th sport sanctioned by the school and the team will compete in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The school has announced that they will hold a nationwide search for a head coach.
Concordia University Chicago is a private, Lutheran liberal arts school with an enrollment of around 5,300. School athletic director Pete Gnan issued a statement saying, “We are very excited to welcome more student-athletes to Concordia-Chicago by adding men’s volleyball. In Illinois right now, there are so many high-schoolers playing men’s volleyball, but not a tremendous amount of college programs if they wish to continue playing, so we are happy to give them another option.”
The announcement comes just days after Immaculata University, Life University, and Cumberland University announced that they too will sponsor men’s volleyball for the 2018/2019 school year.
The Chicago area has been the home of some great volleyball in recent years as Loyola Chicago won back to back NCAA men’s volleyball titles in 2014 and 2015. In addition, Chicago also hosted the 2017 USAV Cup that saw Brazil beat the United States Men’s National Team in back to back matches in August of 2017.
