Not many countries can boast about having volleyball high in their sports hierarchy, as the modality itself has gotten used to playing second fiddle to soccer and basketball all over the world. But Italy is in the right direction, as its male and female professional leagues are the standard for volleyball excellence in the world, drawing fans and sponsorship all over the country. Thus, it not uncommon that it has historically been a volleyball haven for many foreign players, Americans included.

As a testament to the popularity of volleyball in the country, the Italian media has reported that the TV audience for the the A1 Italian Cup finals between Igor Gorgonzola Novara and Imoco Conegliano surpassed that of the Finals of the Italian Men’s Basketball Cup, played at the same time.

Famous Italian volleyball blogger Gian Pasini attributed this success to many things: the high technical and competitive quality of both teams; the production efforts by Lega Volleyball Serie A, which installed nine cameras to transmit the game, including a Jimmy Jib and a Hypermotion Camera, capable of capturing a large amount of frames per second and re-propose them in super slow-motion; special effects all throughout the match and special choreography on the stands, among many other crowd-pleasers.

Fans will now eagerly wait for A1’s playoffs, as both the men’s and women’s tournaments are wrapping up their regular seasons.
