Thailand powerhouse Bangkok Glass Volleyball Club is loading up for the 2017-2018 season. In addition to the earlier-announced addition of Thai libero legend Wanna Buakaew, the team has announced the addition of Czech opposite Sona Mikyskova for next year.
The 6’2″ 28-year old has been on at least the last 2 Czech teams for the FIVB World Grand Prix, but wasn’t able to crack the lineup in either match.
She is listed as having a 305cm (120″) spike and 300cm (118″) block. She’s spent her career split between her native Czech Republic and France, where she was for 7 seasons up until 2016. Then she made the jump to Poland’s Bielsko-Biala. There she was the 10th-rated opposite in the league with 313 kills in 104 sets played (3.01/set). She also had 28 blocks and 21 aces in the regular season. Accompanying those aces, though, where 59 service errors – the most of any opposite in Poland’s OrlenLiga and 3rd-most of any player in the league.
Bangkok Glass, a team founded in 2014, has quickly risen to power within a very short period of time. In their first season, they won the Pro Challenge league (Vietnam’s second tier) and promoted to the Volleyball Thailand League. They then proceeded to win the next two titles in that league, plus 2 more in the Thai-Denmark Super League and also won the 2015 Asian Club Championship. Last year, they finished runners-up for the first time in club history.
Most miraculously is how quickly they’ve risen with a roster of mostly domestic players – beside Mikyskova, the only other international listed on their roster is American outside hitter Ashley Frazier.
