2017 SWATCH BEACH VOLLEYBALL FIVB WORLD TOUR FINALS – MEN

Team USA had some up and down moments during the first two days of play at the FIVB World Tour Finals. Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena were the only American team to finish with a perfect record after pool play, while Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat downed the top-ranked women’s pair in straight sets.

Ross/Sweat fell to the 2016 Olympic champions, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst to go 1-1 in pool play, finishing second in Pool B. With this, they advance on to Round of 16 where they will take on the Czech Republic’s Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova.

By winning their pool, Dalhausser/Lucena will have one day’s rest before they will compete again. This became crucial for the pairing as they have been struggling to adjust to the time change, which could snowball into the later portions of the tournament as they will grow more tired without adequate rest.

Other Americans competing are April Ross and Lauren Fendrick, who are still trying to gel in their new partnership, going 1-1 in pool play. They will take on Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre in the Round of 16. On the men’s side, Theo Brunner and Casey Patterson ended with a 1-1 record, but fell into last place in their pool. This put them through to the next round where they will face off against Germany’s Markus Bockermann and Lorenz Schumann.
