FIVB World Tour – Espinho Two-Star

While most of the eyes of the beach volleyball world are on the World Championships in Vienna, 24 teams took to the sand in Espinho, Portugal, for another stop on the FIVB World Tour.

Brazilian duo George Wanderley and Vitor Felipe took gold on Praia da Baia beach, downing Qatari pair Julio Junior and Ahmed Tijan 21-12, 21-13 for their first World Tour medal.

Wanderley/Felipe, who are in their first year as a pairing,

“It’s very good, it’s the first time we won a senior international event,” Wanderley said. “I won the U19 World Championships in Portugal and now we’ve won the Espinho Open. We felt at home and celebrated as if we were in Brazil, due to the support we felt throughout the tournament and today in the finals.”

Anders Berntsen Mol and Mathias Berntsen of Norway took bronze with a win over countrymen Christian Sorum and Svein Solhaug.

In the semifinals, Junior/Tijan downed Mol/Berntsen 22-20, 21-15. Wanderly/Felipe had a much harder road, bouncing back from a 22-20 Set 1 defeat to squeak out wins of 21-19 and 19-17 for the win.

Americans Trevor Crabb and James Avery Drost made the Round of 16, before falling to Mol/Berntsen.
