The Faroe Island’s national cup winners came down to two five-set matches, with an unexpected men’s victory while the women’s winner fought back from 0-2 to take down their opponent.
SÍ Sørvágur def. ÍF Fuglafjørður 3-2, (25-20, 20-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-8)
On the men’s side of the competition, SÍ Sørvágur’s second team shocked ÍF Fuglafjørður for the 3-2, (25-20, 20-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-8) win. ÍF topped all teams in the national league, with the team being the overwhelming favorites going into the finals. They were made to be the outstanding front runner of the match as they were taking on SÍ B, the second squad of the club. This fact, though, was overshadowed by the wealth of players of SÍ B that had international experience and recently just played in the top tier of the league.
SÍ bounced out to the first set win of 25-20 before ÍF counteracted with a 25-20 win of their own to tie the match at 1-1. ÍF continued their momentum into the third set with a dramatic 27-25 victory before SÍ fought back to force a fifth set at 25-19 in the fourth. In the deciding set, SÍ B jumped out to a 6-0 lead that defined the set as a whole, not stopping until they took the title at 15-8.
Fleyr Tórshavn vs. Dráttur 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-8)
Fleyr was the top team in the league, having taken down their opponents Dráttur twice already this year.
Dráttur stepped up in the first two sets, rolling to two 25-22 victories to hold a 2-0 match advantage. This momentum that they held did not last, as they began to falter at 9-9 in the third set when Fleyr kicked in to win the third 25-15. They kept their momentum going on full force in the fourth set to force the match into the fifth set at 25-21. Fleyr took a quick 7-3 lead in the final set of the match which helped them to clinch the comeback victory 15-8.
