The Final Round of South American Qualifying for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Arequipa, Peru has been interesting because Argentina, Peru and Colombia are still alive after two days of play.

Argentina comfortably handled Colombia in the first match 3-0 on Friday, October 13th. Peru as the host had an easier time with Uruguay to also reach their first win.

On Saturday, Argentina dominated Uruguay 3-0, limiting them to 37 points total in 3 sets. In the second match, Colombia was in a must win situation. A loss of any sort would extinguish their dreams of Japan. The Colombians stunned the partisan Peruvian crowd with a 3-0 sweep. If Peru had won, then the winner of Argentina and Peru would have booked their ticket to Japan. Instead, there is now a chance that all three teams finish at 6 points with 2 wins each.

Scenarios

Argentina plays Peru in the final match and Argentina must win two sets to book their ticket to Japan. This would have them reach 7 points, and the best that Colombia could reach would be 6 and Peru 5, if that happened. If Argentina loses, it needs to win a set to have set ratio tiebreakers over Peru and Colombia (7-3 Argentina vs. best 6-3 for Peru and Colombia) to book their tickets. If Argentina loses in 3 sets, it has a significant points scored advantage for the points ratio (Argentina +53 vs. Peru +12 vs. Colombia -5). Therefore they are really in the driver’s seat.

Peru must defeat Argentina in 3 sets. Peru must also win by 21 points or more to overcome Argentina’s points scored advantage. Argentina would hold all of the other tiebreakers over Peru.

Colombia must defeat Uruguay in 3 sets. It also needs to beat them by a significant margin on points. Colombia also needs Peru to win in 3 sets and also by a large margin on points. If Peru does win by 21 points, Colombia would need to have a +34 points scored advantage minimum to overcome Peru. So, Colombia would need to outscore Uruguay by 39 points (75-36). Uruguay only scored 37 against Argentina on Saturday, so it may be possible, but still difficult. A set loss and they are eliminated. Also a set win by Argentina and they are eliminated.
