Firenze‘s highest scorer in its last two seasons has agreed to a contract extension with the club, per the team’s official website. Indre Sorokaite, who is Lithuanian-born but represents Italy in international competitions, is set to undergo her third year with the club. Here is how she reacted to the news:
“Florence is in my heart, I will stay there for the third year in a row and that says it all: Firenze is a team that is climbing higher and higher in terms of organization, there have been so many improvements since I arrived and this aspect is really important. This year there will be lots of news, with several new companions, but we have everything we need to work well. For me, being the oldest of the group means that I will have to be like a “chicken to its hens”, but I think I have reached the right maturity for this new role. I can not wait to start because unlike last year I will come back with a summer of rest, without the commitments of the national team, and then I can prepare myself to the great things that lie ahead. Every year is a season of its own, with its own history, but I believe that this year we have everything to do well. The team is giving us serenity.”
The 29-year-old Sorokaite has spend all but two seasons with her career in Italy (brief stints in Azerbaijan and Japan). She is a two times Champions League winner with Bergamo. Currently, she is coming off a 2017 season that saw her make Italy’s A1’s All-Star game and win a silver medal with the Italian national team at the 2017 FIVB Grand Prix. This upcoming season, though, she’ll have fierce competition within the squad, as German offensive juggernaut Louisa Lippmann has recently been signed to the club.
