Dynamo Krasnodar and Lyubov Sokolova have recently called a press meeting to announce her retirement and subsequent move to the team’s front office. Here is her official statement:
“I decided to finally finish my sports career. Looking back, I can say that I am completely happy with the part of my life that I spent in volleyball. And I’m not going to leave this wonderful sport. Starting July, I will serve as Dynamo Krasnodar’s general manager. I like this club and I like Krasnodar. I do not regret that I moved here from Moscow. I hope that my success in this new business will be no less weighty than those that I achieved when playing volleyball. At least, I will make every effort for it to be so.”
Widely considered by many experts to be one of the best players to ever play the sport, this is Sokolova’s second retirement. She first retired prior to the 2016 Olympic Games, after winning the 2006 and 2010 World Championships and 2000 and 2004 Olympic silver with Russia’s national team. She shocked fans last season when at 40-year-old she announced her return to volleyball, signing a contract with her beloved Krasnodar, who was undergoing a deep financial crisis, in order to help it fend off relegation. At the end of the season, she was even called up for Russia’s national team again, to which she refused.
