A five-star structure is being introduced for the 2017-2020 Beach Volleyball World Tour events, in a meeting that took place at the FIVB Headquarters on November 30.

The Internationale Volleyball Federation continues to reform their competitions, so each event on the tour will receive a rating of one to five stars. Five and four stars will be the highest level elite events, while three, two and one star events will be there to develop the sport in as many regions as possible.

All aspects of the new structure were covered at the meeting from technical and organizational considerations to marketing and television matters.

This structure is the latest step taken by the FIVB and under FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graca to modernize and streamline competitions. The structure will give event organizers more flexibility to name their competitions away from Grand Slams, Majors and Opens, as long as there is a star rating is included.

The goal of the new structure is to drastically increase the number of events in a growing number of hosting countries. It aims to create a sustainable business model while providing more commercial flexibility and opportunities.

This new system will make events in the World Tour more clear to fans, sponsors and broadcasters.

Depending on the star ranking assigned, the event will need to meet certain criteria set by the FIVB. The criteria includes the level and quality of facilities, technology and infrastructure, the type of competition format, prize money, world ranking points and requirements for TV production and broadcasting.
