As the projected path of Hurricane Irma continues to trend far west of what models showed early, Florida State has joined the run of Florida universities altering their athletics schedules.
That includes cancellation of the Florida State-FAMU Classic, where the Seminoles were due to play Arizona and Tennessee.
Now, FSU has extended their cancellation into the new week – their big Tuesday match against the #1-ranked Florida Gators, which was scheduled for Gainesville, has been postponed. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 12th, but will now be played on Tuesday, September 19th at 6PM instead. The match is part of the Florida Sunshine Showdown rivalry series.
Florida State has closed campus through Friday, September 15th, while earlier in the day on Saturday Florida closed its campus through September 12th.
The latest consensus projections have the storm making land fall near Fort Myers, Florida and riding up the state’s gulf coast. It expected to pass Gainesville’s parallel around 5AM on Monday as still a category 3 hurricane and Tallahassee on Monday evening as a category 2 hurricane.
Irma is currently a category 3 hurricane, but at its peak was one of the biggest and most powerful hurricanes on record. It is expected to strengthen again as it approaches Florida and peak at 150 mile-per-hour winds.
Florida St., who ranked 21st in the latest VolleyMob poll, are 5-1 this season. Florida, the #1 team in the country, also cancelled their home tournament this weekend and are 4-0 this season.
Tickets for the original match will be honored for the rescheduled event.
