NEW YORK – No. 9 Creighton and No. 18 Marquette solidified their spots in the 2018 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship presented by Jeep last weekend, each with a pair of road wins. That leaves only two slots remaining in the field, which is slated for Nov. 23 and 24 in Omaha, Neb., hosted by the Bluejays.
This weekend features three BIG EAST Digital Network matches with two on Friday at 6 p.m. ET and one on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Marquette will travel to Indianapolis for a battle with Butler, while Providence hosts Villanova on Friday. On Sunday, the Wildcats travel to Nebraska to take on the Bluejays. The Golden Eagles will look to stay in line for second in the standings, and the Wildcats are fighting for a spot in the Championship. Creighton seek its 15th and 16th consecutive conference wins this weekend.
There are currently three teams tied for fourth in the standings—Georgetown, Villanova and Xavier—all with a 7-7 BIG EAST record. Each team will play at least one of the other two teams in the final two weekends, with Xavier playing both the Hoyas and Wildcats the final weekend. St. John’s destiny is still yet to be decided, but the Red Storm currently have a three match lead on third place in the league.
In the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, the Bluejays (22-4, 14-0 BIG EAST) remain ranked ninth nationally after sweeping both St. John’s and Seton Hall on the road last weekend. Marquette (22-5, 12-2) has moved back up to No. 18 after going on the road last weekend and taking down Villanova and Georgetown.
Along with the Marquette-Butler match on Friday, Villanova (14-12, 7-7) will head to Providence (8-17, 2-12) for a match slated for 6 p.m. Xavier (9-16, 7-7) will welcome DePaul (5-20, 3-11) with first serve set for 7 p.m. Georgetown travels to Creighton for a contest scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. In its lone match of the weekend, St. John’s (21-9, 10-5) makes the short trip to New Jersey to face Seton Hall (9-19, 4-11) at 8 p.m.
Marquette and Xavier will get things started on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. A half hour later at 1 p.m., Georgetown (14-12, 7-7) and Providence will begin, and Butler (8-18, 5-9) hosts DePaul at 2 p.m. Villanova and Creighton will conclude the weekend on BEDN at 3:30 p.m.
