La Golden Tulip VoltoAlto 2.0 Caserta, a side in the women’s A2 league, the second tier of women’s professional volleyball in Italy, has made a statement after a change of ownership. Following a season where the team was dead-last in the A2 division, winning just 3 of their 32 matches played, Volalto Caserta 2.0 has made a splashy signing via the addition of 36-year old outside hitter Elisa Cella.
The Italian native has played almost her entire career in her home country, saving brief stints in France and Poland, including most recently 2 seasons spent with Imoco Volley Conegliano – who were the champions of the A1 top league last season.
Cella has a long career behind her and will bring a new level of experience to the rebuilding Caserta squad. She played in 84 sets in 31 matches last season, scoring 26 points in limited action as a reserve.
Internationally, Cella won gold at the 1998 European Junior Championships, and then made her senior debut in 2005 when Italy won silver at the World Grand Prix and the European Championships.
Cella stands 6’1″ (183cm) tall, and has played about half of her Italian career in A1 and half in A2 – including twice playing with teams that earned promotions, which is a good omen for Caserta.
