After spending two seasons at George Mason University, Mikala Wells is transferring out of the program and heading not too far from her hometown to the UMKC women’s volleyball program. A junior-to-be in the fall of 2018 season, Wells has already joined the Roos for the spring slate and being that she is changing conferences is likely to be immediately eligible with two years left of play.

A native of Topeka, Kansas – about an hour’s drive to Kansas City – Wells attended Shawnee Heights High School and was named Centennial League Player of the Year in her senior season. From there, she headed off to Virginia to attend George Mason.

In her true freshman season with the Patriots, Wells immediately made an impact in 73 sets of play and logging over two kills per set. Her numbers slightly rose all-around in year two as a sophomore last season when she recorded 190 kills (2.50 per set), 148 digs (1.95 per set), 23 blocks (0.30 per set) and 10 aces (0.13 per set).

The loss leaves George Mason with five players who can play outside hitter currently on their 2018 roster. They finished 6-21 and 2-12 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) last year.

UMKC meanwhile is coming off of a 9-19 season in which they went 5-9 playing in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). They had three outside hitters on their 2017 roster, all of which are set to return for 2018 to surround Wells at the position group.
