George Mason’s WIlliams, VCU’s Giommarini Named A-10 Players of the Wk

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—George Mason junior Bailey Williams and VCU junior Vicky Giommarini were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, while George Mason junior Catie Espinoza was named Defensive Player of the Week. George Washington freshman Heather Merryman was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. All awards were for matches played Oct. 1-7.

Williams averaged 4.33 kills per set along with 3.44 digs per set to lead the Patriots to wins over conference foes Fordham and Rhode Island. The outside hitter from Royal Palm Beach, Fla., also hit .286 and recorded double-doubles in each match.

Giommarini led the Rams to their sixth straight victory in a 3-0 win against Davidson. The outside hitter from Rome, Italy, hit .500 against the Wildcats and recorded 14 kills, averaging 4.67 kills per set.

Espinoza, a libero from Virginia Beach, Va., recorded 59 digs (6.56 digs per set) over two matches last weekend. With her 12thdig in the win over Fordham, Espinoza broke a 24-year old school record and became the program’s all-time leader in digs.

Merryman, a setter from Fairfax, Va., made her first career start and recorded 35 assists in a 3-0 win over Rhode Island Friday. For the week, she averaged 10.14 assists per set over seven sets played.
