FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason men’s volleyball alumnus Brian Negron will continue his volleyball career by playing at the professional level. The 6-7 setter has signed a contract with the Guaynabo Mets, a Puerto Rican professional team, that will see him play for the squad from May until August. The Mets play in the Liga de Voleibol Superior Masculino (LVSM) and have won the last two league championships, plus three in the last four years.
“I’m extrememly excited to go back to the island and play the sport that I love,” Negron said. “The Mets have a lot of talented players on their roster, players who play on the national team which I look up to even now as a member of their organization. I’m excited to compete with them every day in our gym. I wouldn’t want to kick-start my career as a professional volleyball player in any other place.”
Negron’s Monday afternoon was filled with additional good news by being named an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention for his production this past season. A Puerto Rico native himself, he finished his career at George Mason ranked second all-time in career assists with 3,684 and earned All-EIVA First-Team honors in 2018 and 2015. During his senior season in the Green and Gold, Negron was selected as the Uvaldo Acosta Memorial EIVA Player of the Year and helped the Patriots win the regular season EIVA championship for the first time in the modern era.
“I could not be more proud of Brian, and am very excited for his next step in his professional career,” head coach Jay Hosack said. “I know his work ethic is very high, and he will no doubt make his new employers very happy. Mason Nation should be proud of their boy.”
Negron joins Radoslav Popov as the two Patriots currently playing overseas that have played under Hosack.
“I want to thank the Guaynabo Mets for taking a chance and believing in me,” Negron said. “I’m ready to restart and keep working towards the top.”
