NORCECA has announced that Havana, Cuba has been chosen as the host for the Men’s Final Qualification Tournament for the 2018 FIVB World Championship. The tournament will take place from January 5-7 2018. In addition to the host nation, Cuba, the pool consists of three other teams: Mexico, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. The top two teams from this tournament will snag 2 of the 5 remaining NORCECA World Championship berths.
Cuba and Puerto Rico were both unable to compete in the original NORCECA Championships in the aftermath of devastation laid by the Atlantic hurricane season. As a result of the unprecedented disaster, NORCECA decided to join them with the 4th and 5th place finishers from the continental championship, Mexico and Guatemala, in a battle for the last spot from the region for the World Championships.
Changing the dates of this event has opened up the opportunity for players competing in leagues abroad to travel to Cuba to compete with their respective national teams. Canada, the United States and the Dominican Republic have all already qualified to the World Championships through the 10 team Continental Championship. The 2018 edition of the World Championship will take place next September in Bulgaria and Italy.
