The Iowa Hawkeyes swept the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on the road in straight sets Friday night (25-8, 25-19, 25-13) to advance to 8-5 in the Big Ten.
Hawkeye freshman Cali Foye had a new personal-best night with 6 kills and a career-high .556 hitting average. Teammates Meghan Buzzerio and Lauren Brobst also finished with six kills, and Loxley Keala tallied 5 kills and a .833 hitting percentage.
Iowa dominated the first set, only allowing Rutgers 8 points in the entire game. Although the Scarlet Knights tried to fight back in the second set, earning 19 points, they weren’t able to overpower the Hawkeyes. Iowa’s defense held Rutgers to just 13 points in the final set, keeping Rutgers to 0-13 in conference play.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Freshman Cali Hoyehad a personal-best six kills for the University of Iowa volleyball team as the Hawkeyes captured a 3-0 victory over Rutgers on Friday night in College Avenue Gymnasium. Iowa is now 18-7 overall with an 8-5 Big Ten mark.
In addition to her six kills, Hoye amassed a career-high .556 attacking percentage. Meghan Buzzerio and Lauren Brobst also chipped in six kills, while Loxley Kealaracked up five kills and a .833 hitting percentage.
Iowa jumped out to a 6-2 lead to begin set one. Rutgers scored back-to-back points to cut off the run, but the Hawkeyes stopped the Scarlet Knights in their tracks and finished the set with a 20-4 stretch. This run was bolstered by kills from Brobst (3), Ashley Mariani (2), and Jess Janota (1). Annika Olsen, Keala and Janota each added an ace, while Hoye chipped in a block to aid the visitors. Hoye was a force off the bench as she scored the final four points of set one to give Iowa a 25-8 victory.
After Rutgers began set two with a 4-2 advantage, the Hawkeyes used a 14-5 run to take the lead. Coyle (2), Mariani (1), Keala (2), Buzzerio (3), Brobst (1) and Janota (1) chipped in kills, while Janota and Olsen each added an ace to give Iowa a 17-8 lead. The Scarlet Knights came charging back with an 8-2 run, but Iowa shut the home team down with a 6-3 stretch to capture a 25-19 second-set win.
The Hawkeyes started set three on a 5-1 run before the Scarlet Knights scored three consecutive points to stop the run. Iowa then went on a 12-3 run with kills from Buzzerio (2), Keala (2), Kasey Reuter (1) and Brobst (1) to take a 17-7 lead. Rutgers scored back-to-back points to cut off the stretch, but the Hawkeyes could not be stopped as they concluded the match on a 9-4 run. Taylin Alm (2), Hoye (1) and Reagan Davey (1) each added a point to give Iowa the 25-13 set victory and a 3-0 match win.
Up Next: Iowa takes the court again tomorrow as it faces No. 11 Penn State in State College, Penn. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CT).

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The Rutgers women’s volleyball team suffered a three-set loss to Iowa on Friday night at the College Ave Gym. The Hawkeyes (18-7, 8-5 Big Ten) topped the Scarlet Knights (4-22, 0-13 Big Ten) by set scores of 25-8, 25-19 and 25-13.
Four Scarlet Knights added three or more kills in the match, including Jasmine Stackhouse(4), Mikaela Matthews (3), Lauren Cloyd (3) and Brooke Enners (3). Enners’ three blocks marked the first of her career.
Meghan Buzziero and Lauren Brobst led Iowa with six kills each. Loxley Keala posted a match-best 32 assists, along with five kills in the win.
After falling in the first set, Rutgers picked up the pace in the second by opening with the lead. A block for the duo of Enners and Matthews kept the RU lead growing to 4-2. Iowa responded by tying up the frame before moving in front, 8-5. A kill for Micaela Anderson stumped the brewing run and kept RU in reach at 9-7. However, the Hawkeyes found a rhythm to distance their edge by as many as nine. The Scarlet Knights regrouped late in the set, as a Cloyd kill ignited an 8-0 run for RU to cut the deficit to 18-16. RU held its energy, but Iowa maintained an edge en route to its second set win of the match.
Despite falling to a four point deficit to start the third, Rutgers found a rhythm to pull within one on a Cloyd kill at 5-4. From there, Iowa regained its momentum to grow its lead to by as many as 10. The Scarlet Knights continued to tack on points, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. The Hawkeyes closed the victory with a win in the third set.

Rutgers welcomes the reigning National Champions and top-ranked Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 5. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the College Ave Gym.

- Rutgers led Iowa in blocks, 8-6, marking the 14th match the Scarlet Knights have led their opponent in the category.
- Jasmine Stackhousehas posted four or more blocks in four consecutive matches. Stackhouse’s four blocks was one shy of her season-best in a Big Ten matchup.
- Brooke Ennerstallied her first career blocks with three in the contest, along with two kills and two digs.
