Houston Set To Take On Prairie View A&M Wednesday

The University of Houston Volleyball program closes its four-match homestand with a 7 p.m. first serve against Prairie View A&M on Wednesday inside Athletics/Alumni Center.

Tickets are $5 for general admission. Houston students will receive free admission with their valid Cougar Card.

In honor of International Chocolate Day, the first 100 fans will receive free chocolate.

  • The Cougars (3-3) are coming off a 2-1 record in the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup to open their home schedule. Houston defeated Stetson, 3-1, in their home opener before falling 3-2 to McNeese on Friday. In the tournament finale, the Cougars bested Mississippi State, 3-1, to take runner-up honors.
  • Sophomore libero Katie Karbo and freshman Abby Irvine were each named to the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup All-Tournament for their respective efforts. Karbo, who was also named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll, averaged 5.77 digs per set and recorded seven service aces, while Irvine, who posted two double-doubles, averaged 5.77 assists and 2.23 digs per set with five service aces.
  • Houston is 2-0 (Sets: 6-1) all-time against PVAMU and 1-0 (Sets: 3-0) when hosting the Lady Panthers. The Cougars swept PVAMU as part of the Houston Kickoff Tournament inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Sept. 5, 1987.
  • Houston leads the American Athletic Conference in service aces per set (1.92) and opponent hitting percentage (.139).
  • Karbo leads The American in digs (5.35) and ranks fourth in service aces per set (0.42). Senior middle blocker Brianna Gardner ranks seventh in hitting percentage (.325), while senior outside hitter Brianna Lynch ranks eighth in kills per set (3.19). Freshman setter Abby Irvine ranks third among freshmen in assists per set (6.23).

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Prairie View A&M

  • The Lady Panthers enter the week with a 0-1 record. PVAMU fell 3-0 to HBU in its season opener on Sept. 5. The Lady Panthers host McNeese on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
  • In their lone match against the Huskies, setter Mykaeli Franklin posted a 17-assist, 10-dig effort, while Taylor Goudeau and Larissa Martinez led PVAMU with seven kills apiece.
  • The Lady Panthers are in their third season under Head Coach TaCho Tyler, a former letterwinner and 2007 graduate of PVAMU.
  • The Lady Panthers finished 9-20 overall and 8-10 in SWAC play in 2016.

UP NEXT

The Cougars will close their non-conference schedule with a visit to LSU on Saturday to open a three-match road swing. Following the trip to the Bayou State, Houston will open play in The American with trips to Tulsa (Sept. 22) and SMU (Sept. 24).
