The University of Iowa has hired Victoria Brown to become the programs new associate head coach. She replaces the spot vacated when Clemson hired away the former associate head coach Michaela Franklin to be its new head coach.

“Vicki will add such great experience as a former middle blocker in the Big Ten and as a head coach at the Division 1 level,” said Iowa head coach Bond Shymansky. “She has strong character and a fantastic demeanor. We are counting on Vicki to continue our strong recruiting trend and add a new perspective to our team and training. We believe we are poised for the next step as a program and will value Vicki’s input and efforts to help us get there.”

Brown spent last year as the head coach of both the indoor and beach volleyball teams at the University of San Francisco. The move was effective Thursday. In her one season of indoor, USF finished just 4-27, but had a bright spot when outside hitter Tyna Adamcikova was named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman team.

Brown came to USF as an assistant in the spring of 2016 and was shortly thereafter promoted to head coach. Her 2016 team returned just 3 players from the prior year’s team, leaving her a tough uphill battle.

Upon her departure, the school’s beach team is 0-13 this season. They still have two games to play this weekend against Sacramento State and Cal Poly before next week’s West Coast Conference Championships.

Prior to USF, she spent two seasons as an assistant at UC Davis, and before that 2 seasons as an assistant at Illinois State and one as a volunteer assistat at Toledo.

Brown played her collegiate volleyball in the Big Ten at the University of Illinois and was twice named All-Big Ten Hoorable Mention. She had more than 1000 career kills and 3 times had over 100 kills in a season. She graduated in 2008 with a degree in communications. She went on to play professionally in Austria, Puerto Rico, and Spain.

“I am very appreciative of this opportunity,” said Brown. “It is a blessing to be a part of a strong academic and athletic university. Coach Shymansky is a phenomenal coach and I feel very fortunate to join his talented staff. I am excited to be a part of this great university and volleyball program.

“I want to thank Scott Sidwell, as well as Joan McDermott, for giving me my first collegiate head coaching job and supporting me during my time here,” Brown said. “I would like to thank the student-athletes that have competed for me. Finally, a big thank you to my staff, Daryl Kapis and Simone Ortega.”
