Following an Italian League Championship, Sir Sicoma Colussi Perugia has extended their head coach Lorenzo Bernardi. The new contract will keep Bernardi with the club for two more years, lasting until the end of the 2019-2020 season.

Perugia led the way in the top Italian division in 2017-2018, going 23-3 (70 points) to finish first in the regular season before moving their way through the postseason and defeating Lube Civitanova in the Italian Serie A1 Championship.

The 49-year-old Bernardi started with Perugia in 2016. That was after a long playing career which featured an MVP award at the 1992 FIVB World League and Best Player of the 1994 FIVB World Championship along with a journey as a coach with other clubs. The 10-time gold medalist as a player started with Anaune Pallavolo (2007-2009) and worked his way through Italy B (2009), Sempre Volley (2009-2010), Jastrzebski Wegiel (2010-2014) and Halkbank Ankara (2014-2016).

“I am convinced that we still have some way to go and margins of growth and therefore happy to be able to continue on this path and in the project of the company,” Bernardi said to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “As a team we have a framework, an important base. Then of course there will be some new interpreters. On the market we have very clear ideas and objectives and we are in good hands with the president and the managers who deal with it.”

The club was founded in 2001, with this past season representing their first atop Italian Serie A1. They also claimed the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) to give them their third gold in two years (Italian SuperCup Champions in 2017) and collected a bronze medal at the 2018 CEV Champions League.
