January 19 Recap: Sweeps From UCI, Loyola, and Lewis on Friday

#4 UCI DEF. NJIT 3-0, (25-13, 25-17, 25-21)

UC Irvine totaled a season-high six aces and middle blocker Scott Stadick posted a match-high nine kills and a season-high in total blocks with seven. The Anteaters have won three straight and this was their third sweep of the season.

#19 FORT WAYNE DEF. HARVARD 3-1, (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19)

Fort Wayne squeaks past Harvard in a four-set match in Harvard’s first competition of the 2018 season. The Mastadons remain unbeaten while the Crimson has started its season off with a loss.

Harvard was out-hit by Fort Wayne .306 to .198. Pelegrin Vargas led the Mastadons with 18 kills, three blocks, and one ace.

#6 LOYOLA-CHICAGO DEF. GRAND VIEW 3-0, (25-16, 25-21, 25-18)

It was the season opener for Grand View, with the Ramblers coming out on top in a three-set match. Two players hit above .500 in the win, with Jeff Jendryk leading the way with a .727 clip while Collin Mahan hit .588.

#10 LEWIS DEF. #11 SAINT FRANCIS 3-0, (25-20, 25-11, 25-21)

Lewis ran to an easy three-set win over Saint Francis to open up the weekend, using less than half of the errors of Saint Francis to push them to the win. Tyler Mitchem led the squad with 11 kills while TJ Murray hit .667 on the match.

GEORGE MASON (RV) DEF. MOUNT OLIVE 3-1, (25-27, 25-18, 25-18, 25-15)

After dropping the first set, George Mason dominated three straight sets to take the win over Mount Olive. Hayden Wagner had a career night with 24 kills, three aces, and two blocks.

#17 BALL STATE DEF. SACRED HEART 3-2, (25-13, 25-16, 25-27, 25-21, 15-7)

Ball State handed Sacred Heart a loss in their first match of the season. The team’s offense was led by Matt Szews with 17 kills while Matt Walsh added 15.
