Four thousand people watched Japan come from behind a 2-0 score to beat Team USA in a 5 set war (25-23, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18, 15-9) in the first day of volleyball play. Kenya Fujinaka led the way for the Japanese with 20 points, while Ohio State University’s Kelan Johnson had 28 for team USA.

In all, 22 teams divided into four pools will battle in out in the tournament. Group play will follow a simple round robin format to determine finalists. Russia is the current champions, with Ukraine and Argentina having won last tournament’s silver and bronze medals, respectively. Here are the pool results and recaps from day 1:

Five thousand people watched hosts Chinese Taipei debut in front of its home crowd. Unfortunately for them, France spoiled their party with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20) win. Jordan Corteggiani had 16 points for France, while Taipei’s Tsung-Hsuan WU tallied 21.
Current champions Russia beat Hong Kong in three easy sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-14). Sergei Nikitin led the way for Russia with 12, while Alex Chan had 11 for Hong Kong.
Current silver medalists Ukraine beat mexico in three tight sets (25-20, 25-22, 26-24) behind Stanislav Neviadomskyi’s 13 points. Alejandro Moreno had 13 for Mexico.
Current bronze medalists Argetina beat Switzterland in a tight 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 28-26) match, behind Federico Martina’s 14 points. Damian Ehrat had 10 for Switzterland.
Romania beat Chile 3-0 in a progressive fashion (25-23, 25-28, 25-9) behind Ianout Balean’s superb 20 points, a high total for only three sets of play. Ignacio Zavala had a low 8 points as Chile’s team high.
Iran beat Cyprus 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-12) in a very one sided game. Mohammad Fallah led the way for Iran with 11 points, while Gabriel Georgiou had 8 for Cyprus.
The Czech Republic beat Australia in a relatively easy 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-20) match. Martin Hladik led the way for for the Czech with 21 points, while Thomas Hodgues had 15 for Australia.
Portugal beat South Korea in a 3-2 ( 21-25, 25-29, 25-23, 19-25, 15-12) battle. Lourenço Martins led the way for Portugal with 21 points, the same total of Korea’s highest scorer, Kyungmin Hwang.
Canada and The United Arab Emirates had another five set war, with Canada coming out on top (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 16-14). James Wood tallied 22 points for Canada, as Amer Al Marzooqui added 21 for the UAE.
