Jefferson, Bates Headline MEAC Week 8 Honorees

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 15, 2018—Bethune-Cookman sophomore Jordan Jefferson and Morgan State sophomore Kalysia Bates were named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Coppin State’s Miajavon Coleman was named Rookie of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman junior Shayla Eugene earned Defensive Specialist of the Week honors and Coppin State freshman Brianna Lang was named Setter of the Week.

Jefferson (5-8, So., OH, San Antonio, Texas) had double-doubles in each of the Lady Wildcats’ two matches this past weekend, wins over South Carolina State and Savannah State. She opened the weekend with 13 kills and a career-high 28 digs against the Lady Bulldogs, and she followed that up on Sunday with 14 kills and 10 digs against the Lady Tigers. For the weekend, Jefferson averaged nearly four points, four kills and 5.4 digs per set.

Bates (6-1, So., MH, Phoenix, Ariz.) hit .500 in two matches this past weekend, her efforts on offense a key reason the Lady Bears went 2-0. She opened the weekend with 17 kills in a three-set win over Delaware State, a match in which she hit .640. She followed that up on Sunday with 11 kills, six total blocks and a service ace in Morgan State’s straight-set win over Northern Division preseason favorite Maryland Eastern Shore. For the weekend, Bates averaged 4.7 kills and 5.6 points per set.

Coleman (5-10, Fr., OH, San Antonio, Texas) averaged nearly 6.1 points per set this past weekend, eclipsing the 20-kill mark in both of the Eagles’ matches. She opened the weekend with a 28-kill effort in a five-set loss to Maryland Eastern Shore, before rebounding on Sunday with 25 kills on .255 hitting in a four-set win over Delaware State. For the weekend, Coleman hit .240 and averaged 5.9 kills per set.

Eugene (5-4, Jr., DS, Fort Worth, Texas) averaged 5.3 digs per set for the Lady Wildcats this past weekend, helping them to a 2-0 record against Southern Division foes. She opened the weekend with 23 digs in a four-set win over South Carolina State, before turning in a 14-dig effort on Sunday in a win over Savannah State.

Lang (5-8, Fr., S., Atlanta, Ga.) averaged 11.0 assists per set this past weekend, and she racked up 50 in the Eagles’ four-set win over Delaware State on Sunday. Lang also had eight digs and two service aces in that match. She also shined on Friday against Maryland Eastern Shore, recording 49 assists and 10 digs in the narrow five-set loss.
