In what came down to a match with the team having the least amount of errors winning, Italy’s Alex Ranghieri/Adrian Carambula took down Germany’s Markus Bockermann/Lars Fluggen 2-1, (21-10, 18-21, 15-8).
The focus on serves for the Italians was at Bockermann in the first two sets but moved to Fluggen in the deciding set. This forced Bockermann to hit the ball, which proved to be effective as he was inconsistent throughout the entire match. Bockermann tried a number of different shots against the Italians but missed the mark on the sideline and out the back line. In addition, he could not find a way around the strong Ranghieri block that stopped the German’s eight times in the match.
Carambula mixed up his shots throughout the match, using the line and cross shots to trip up the German defense.
From here, the Italians will advance to the Round of 32 that will begin on August 3.
